The world faces opposing challenges, feeding just under 10 billion people by 2050, whilst also minimizing the effect of this on our planet. To meet these challenges innovation and technology plays a key role in generating efficiencies and conserving scarce resources.
Over the past century agricultural output has increased markedly on the back of the adoption of high yielding varieties, improved application of chemicals and fertilizer and mechanization. This phenomenon, apparent in the 1950s and 1960s was called the Green Revolution. Since then further efficiency gains were made through innovation related to the development and adoption of genetically modified plant varieties and more recently precision farming as a practice where inter and intra monitoring of fields allows for the optimization of returns on inputs through satellite technology, to name a few.
Climate-related issues are, however, at the forefront of the global development agenda and agriculture needs to play its part to curb climate change and conserve natural resources. Issues related to ground moisture control, evaporation and wastewater management in agro-processing are examples of practical issues that speak directly to efficiency and climate goals. Solutions can range from innovations like shade netting that limit evaporation to sensors and the internet of things that generates high frequency metrics, such as ground moisture, through sensors connected to the internet. Investment into these technologies and innovations are, however, costly and producers should use good seasons to position themselves to remain efficient and competitive while also keeping longer-term climate goals in mind.
In the financial space, agricultural financiers can make use of technologies like remote sensing. This enables the monitoring of crop development and provide a number of climate monitoring and forecasting tools. These technologies provide symbiotic benefits to both financiers and producers and although not directly contributing to climate goals, it contributes to the efficiency and risk management of agricultural financing and production. Data generated through this can also be used to build long-term profiles of producers to see how climate variability affects farming operations over time.
As with the Green Revolution in the 1960s, future success for all stakeholders in agriculture, will belong to those who can balance divergent goals through the adoption of technologies associated with the ongoing 4th industrial revolution.

The art of fine shoe-making is a specific design discipline and one that excites the team of entrepreneurs behind the Rwandan shoe brand, UZURI K&Y. Kevine Kagirimpundu (CEO & Co-Creative designer) and Ysolde Shimwe (CFO & Co-Creative designer) and are combining their substantial design talents to create some of the hottest shoes on the continent.
LoA connected with co-founder and ceo, Kevine Kagirimpundu, this month to find out more about this rising star of the African shoe scene….
What does your company do?
UZURI K&Y is a Rwandan enterprise based in Kigali and registered since June 2013, designing and manufacturing a line of eco footwear. With the impact of creating jobs in the handcraft sector, from our workshop located in Gikondo, we have trained a great team of shoe makers to produce high quality handcrafted shoes for women and men.
What inspired you to start your company?
Myself, Kevine Kagirimpundu, and my cofounder, Ysolde Shimwe, are both creative, self-taught designers from the University of Rwanda, inspired to create jobs in our community through our love for design. We used to dream a lot of the future, sharing life perspectives and it was so pleasant how our desires converged to become a common vision. We have invested our time, money and skills learning, and formed a good team to produce our designs from Rwanda. We have developed original techniques to handcraft our shoes, with their unique features and patterns, and a particular way of preparing materials.
Why should anyone buy your products in particular?
We produce sustainable products in the circular economy. Our products differ from our competitors’ in various ways such as colours, patterns and original concepts, all generated using local materials such as Agaseke patterns produced by local artisans and also showcasing our traditional old techniques into new ways of application. Our products also differ from others in the combination of materials used, which are mixed with African sourced fabrics, as well as using different soles such as TPU, TPR and recycled tires.
Tell us a little about your team?
We are a team of young people and female dominated.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey, and do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
My father was a young business man teaching through a tvet program to the less privileged before 1994. My siblings are also creatives. When I started College, at the University of Rwanda, College of Science and Technology, I met a friend who later became a business partner and together we brought our dreams and wishes into reality.
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
Creating a sustainable company with a social impact while generating profit for investors. Our company aspires to provide affordable, quality eco footwear to fashion-lovers both at home and all over the world. Inspired by our African heritage, the footwear is designed in Rwanda and handcrafted by local people. Creating employment especially for women and youth is at the heart of our business. It is also our vision for UZURI K&Y to be a well-known international footwear brand designed in Rwanda in a world where Rwanda is a recognized originator of fashion items.
What gives you most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
Seeing women working with passion and running their households at the same time.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to any woman entrepreneur starting up in business?
Be consistent and understand your financial story.

For the longest time African children, and children from rural and marginalized areas have been underserved when it comes to Early Childhood Development(ECD) services. Apple Tree Montessori is for those communities and by those communities. African people need representation in all aspects of their life and it should start with Education in ECD. Our services are not exclusively for African families, but they are our first priority. Anyone else who really wants to learn about diversity and inclusion are also welcome.

Mpho Rasepae is the 18 month to 3-year old’s’ directress. She has been working with children in formative years since 2006. She loves telling stories in Setswana, reading and working in the garden.
Ntsiki Gwendolyn Bereng, is the founder, directress and yoga instructor at Apple Tree Montessori. She enjoys cooking with the kids, reading, DIY projects, traveling, and she is also a novice gardener.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
I don’t have any formal entrepreneurial background. I have fond memories of driving around in one of my father’s taxis collecting and counting the passengers fare. My exposure in the education space piqued my interest in the education business. It was when I was doing my first year in university that I knew I wanted to open my own school. I just didn’t know how to at the time, so I decided to differ my dreams. The need for this school came back in 2010 and I felt that I had enough support and resources to start the pre-school and the rest would follow as I went along.
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
Our plan is to collaborate with organisations/individuals who are like minded and want to elevate the Black communities across South Africa and beyond. We have just launched the Adopt-A-3-year-old campaign, where we appeal to corporates and individuals to sponsor a 3-year-old or two for a period of three years (2022 to 2025). We are also partnering with an NGO in Mpumalanga on a similar campaign but slightly bigger in terms of our reach and that involves an Afgri-Academy. We want the school in Mpumalanga to be our teaching school where Training and Development will be provided for our directresses and student teachers. All in all our plans include a Training and Development Institution – satellite schools across South Africa.

At Dvyn Treats Batamba’s, we supply the best quality, ethically sourced coffee and freshly roasted coffee from Africa and other regions. We use local roasting techniques that not only empower local communities but also feel close to home.
Tell us a little about your team
Dvyn Treats Batamba’s has two co-founders – a young couple (Mike Mulenga Tambatamba and myself, Emilia Banda Tambatamba) who manage the daily operation of the business and do everything from design, marketing, production, sales, among others. Mike (Zambian with acquired Mozambican Nationality), my husband is a chartered accountant by profession and is a coffee lover, roaster and coffee blend developer who acquired his skills from his father in Zambia from a tender age. He also helps with social media and our website. My two brothers in law who help with package labelling and stock management, a logistics and supply assistant that helps with sourcing the beans and clearing, a sales rep that helps us with the sales and manage clients with contacts, and finally a caretaker for our small factory.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
I grew up with a mother who was strong willed and financially conscious, and she always taught us the value of money and how it could be earned. At the time, it was either through pocket money at the end of the month or good grades and chores. We were never allowed to ask for money, so when hair braids started becoming famous all the little girls had them, but us. So, my sisters and I began to rent our bicycle in exchange for coins until we were able to save enough money to plait our own for hair braids. From there onwards, we never stopped enterprising.
Later when I was 9 years old, my mother passed away and I was placed in the care of my mother’s sister in Swaziland. My aunt used to have a business of growing and selling chickens, fruits and snacks in Mazini taxi rank and after school I would go to help her pack the fruits for her sales boys. When my uncle lost his Job in Swaziland, we moved to South Africa. Unfortunately, he was unable to secure a job within the first six months after our arrival. As a result, my aunt started making fat cookies “amagwinya” for us to sell before we went to school. I can say that this trained me how to sell door to door. In high school, I would braid my colleagues’ hair during break-time to earn some extra money for myself.
After my matric (grade 12), I moved back to Mozambique where I studied business management at the University of Saint Thomas where I earned Honours in business Management. At the University I met a wonderful guy who introduced me to coffee and is now my husband. We then decided to open a coffee shop where we would showcase my Dvyn treats and serve Batamba’s coffee. Soon after, I attended a Standard Bank incubator’s Ideator where I learnt how to model the business. As the coffee shop failed to survive, we remodeled the business to what it is today. Dvyn Treats Batamba’s now focuses on providing support for small and medium sized businesses, with fresh coffee and with machinery for various levels of the businesses.

Providing a stimulating, safe learning environment for young children is key in Africa if they are to fulfill their potential. For entrepreneur and educator, Ntsiki Gwendolyn Bereng, founder of Apple Tree Montessori in South Africa, this need provided her with the inspiration to start her impact driven education business.
LoA chatted to Ntsiki this month to find out more about her passion for education and her entrepreneurial journey to date.
About the founder
Ntsiki Gwendolyn Bereng is the founder of Apple Tree Montessori in South Africa. She has 18 years’ experience in the education sector. 9 years in teaching, 6 in operations and management, and 4 years in research. She has taught in South Africa at pre-school, primary school and high school levels. She is now an Early Childhood Development Specialist in the Montessori Philosophy. Ntsiki’s passion for children and her sense of wanting to create a legacy is derived from her teaching and entrepreneurial background, with her mother and her older siblings as educators and her father being a taxi owner and a small holdings farmer. She lives with her teenage son and her friend’s twin daughters who all assist with the running of the pre-school. She says that it is important for her to involve them in the process of legacy creation, in that way they give it more respect and develop the love and passion for it. In 2012 she experienced a lot of anxiety but could not explain what she was going through. She started practicing yoga. In 2017 she qualified as a children’s yoga instructor, and now yoga is part of the curriculum at Apple Tree Montessori. She says, ”Yoga teaches us to be in the moment with our emotions and let them go once the practice is over. Imagine a 3 or 4 year old who is able to express themselves without any limitations.”
What does your company do?
Apple Tree Montessori is an early childhood development playgroup that was established in 2019 to address the need for more African Educational institutions that provide a stimulating learning environment for the African child. The playgroup was founded with an understanding that each child arrives with their own story and all they need is guidance to tell that story. Our methods of teaching employ scientifically designed tools that target specific stages of development universal to all children. Our curriculum strongly emphasizes on incorporating the African worldview in all that we teach. We provide a foundation for African values and systems. Our “One in 54” programme infuses African cultures in all the learning areas.
What inspired you to start your company?
The inspiration behind Apple Tree Montessori came in 2010 when I needed a preschool for my then 3 year old son. Being an educator, and coming from a family of educators myself, I wanted a school that felt like home for me and my son. When I struggled to find that sort of school, I wondered what other African parents were going through when searching for schools for their children. I decided to work and study part-time, to pursue my career in Early Childhood Development majoring in Montessori philosophy. The apple seed was planted then.
Why should anyone use your service or product?
For the longest time African children, and children from rural and marginalized areas have been underserved when it comes to Early Childhood Development(ECD) services. Apple Tree Montessori is for those communities and by those communities. African people need representation in all aspects of their life and it should start with Education in ECD. Our services are not exclusively for African families, but they are our first priority. Anyone else who really wants to learn about diversity and inclusion are also welcome.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
Knowing that I am creating a legacy that will outlive me is satisfactory for me. When my children are involved and they get to see and reap the rewards for generations to come. Being an eternal learner also gives me satisfaction, together with the relationships that are formed with like-minded people in different industries.
What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
Once you have identified your passion, research and learn the business in and out. Learn the laws, rules and processes that govern that industry. Talk to people in that industry and find out who is who, then make your presence known.
Learn your target market and decide if that is the target market you want to serve. Once you have decided, your decision must be unwavering, because there will be people who will want to convince you otherwise.
You are your first customer, your product/service should be so good that you are proud to carry it or wear it boldly.
Immediately after registering your company/NPO/Corporate find an accountant or bookkeeper or administrator. You can’t do everything, your focus should be on perfecting your product /art.
