It’s never too late to reinvent your personal brand, here’s how… — Lionesses of Africa

by Lori Milner

7 ways to create the best version of yourself…

I have coached and trained hundreds of people on personal branding and the number one question I get asked is… “Is it too late for me to reinvent my brand and change perceptions?”

The good news is that it is never too late.

When it comes to your personal brand, you have the choice to either do a full reboot or make some small upgrades to your operating software.

Before you charge forward, you must first understand the current context. Consider these questions:

  • When you walk into a room, how do people receive you?

  • What do you think is the biggest misconception they have about you?

  • How do you want people to perceive you?

  • What words do you want to come into their mind when they think about you?

  • What do you want to be known for?

  • What is the promise you make and what can people expect of you when they engage with you?

Now that you have a clear idea of how you want to show up, you need to make sure your behaviour is in alignment.

Branding is not something you do; it is who you are.

You do not need a new website or more frequent posts on social media to change perceptions.

Great brands are created from the inside out.

Reinvention begins with your thinking –your internal dialogue, thoughts and beliefs. These shape your actions, your habits and character.

Here are the steps to begin the journey to reinventing your personal brand:

1. Change your code

“Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.” – Kushand Wizdom

The mind is a supercomputer and will do what you instruct it to do.

Psychologist, Marissa Peer says, “Your mind does not care if what you tell it is good, bad, true, false, healthy unhealthy, or right or wrong, it accepts and acts on your words regardless”.

Think about your words as the code for your internal programming. Confidence starts in the mind with the thoughts you tell yourself. What you communicate to yourself has a huge impact on how you project yourself to the rest of the world.

Choose your words carefully – how often do you describe yourself as stressed, a worrier, anxious, shy, useless, not enough?

Jack Canfield, best-selling author of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ suggests that the first step to owning your headspace is “to take control of the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take.”

How you use these three things determines everything you experience. If you don’t like what you are currently producing and experiencing, you must change your responses.

Change your negative thoughts to positive ones. Change what you daydream about. Change your habits. Change what you read. Change how you talk to yourself and others.

It doesn’t matter how professional your website is or where your SEO ranking lies – if you walk into a meeting feeling like you are not enough, it will filter through every aspect of yourself and people can pick this up instantly.

2. Let your future self be your North Star

“Victims use language to describe the life they lead. Owners use language to create the life they lead” – Steve Chandler

When it comes to reinventing your personal brand, there is an incongruity between being authentic to your current self and your future self.

Ask yourself these questions from Benjamin Hardy’s brilliant book, Personality isn’t Permanent:

  • Who would you be if you could creatively design yourself?

  • What would happen if you based your identity on who you want to be, rather than who you’ve been?

Let’s say you are working towards a particular role in your work, but it requires public speaking, and this terrifies you.

If you want to genuinely reinvent yourself, you need to make decisions that are authentic to your future self despite your fear and the discomfort you feel today.

Eventually over time, you will master the skills and become that person.

3. Shift from perfection to contribution

“Successful people become great leaders when they learn to shift the focus from themselves to others.” – Marshall Goldsmith

How many opportunities have you missed because you told yourself that you aren’t ready for it? Or you missed a deadline because you agonized over every word in the document or presentation?

Perfection is a mirage, a story you have told yourself. You may have every great intention of wanting the work to be perfect in order to be perceived as a powerful brand.

However, this approach is not sustainable and will only make you miserable because your definition of perfection is probably what is holding you back from being the brand you want.

In your eyes, it is never attainable and if it is, at what cost to you?

In order to reinvent yourself, you need to shift your focus from perfection to contribution.

When I must deliver a big talk or workshop and I can feel the fear of judgement creeping in, I remind myself I am there to deliver a message because I have the skills and knowledge.

I put my focus on delighting the audience and adding value to them. This can be an audience of two or two hundred.

It is no longer about me – it is about the message. All the fear of judgement dissipates, and I simply focus on the value I can bring.

When the next opportunity to present in a meeting comes up, remind yourself you have been asked for a reason. You have unique insights, perspectives and knowledge that will add value.

Put the focus on the audience – how do you want them to feel, think and do as a result of what you have shared?

Then it doesn’t matter if you forgot a particular fact or how you spoke – it’s about the contribution you made and the problem you solved. That is a powerful brand.

4. Stop seeking external validation

“What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others.” – Confucius

The difference between external validation and self-worth is that one is an infinite resource and the other finite.

Constantly seeking external validation to boost your confidence and sense of self-worth is not a sustainable strategy. At some point, the external validation well will run dry.

Self-confidence comes from daily doses of micro wins. It is incremental steps over time in the direction of your goal that produces momentum. When you can see progress, your self-worth automatically inflates.

The problem with external validation is exactly that, it’s external. It’s nice to be told you did a good job and gain the recognition however this cannot be your permission device to feel good about yourself.

If you are only fuelled by other opinions of you, what happens after a week when the compliments wear off? Reinventing your brand begins when you can fill your own cup first.

You must walk into a room feeling enough despite the outcome and what people say.

If you give your power away to the next criticism, snotty email or strange look – you will always be chasing other’s approval of you and stay in the zone of ‘not enough’ and dent your self-worth.

Imagine yourself as a battery pack, you know the ones you carry around for your phone?

You need to start the day on full charge, you can’t have the mind-set that another person, another meeting, another sale (fill in the blank) will charge that battery for you.

Have you ever tried to charge your Apple phone on an Android charger? It’s just not going to happen. It’s the same with you.

Don’t put your self-worth or acceptance of yourself in the hands of another person. You may just not be compatible, and they will never be able to charge your battery.

For those days when you are feeling half full, then make sure you surround yourself with people who love and support you. They are the only compatible chargers.

5. Fixed mindset vs growth mindset

“There’s no such thing as failure, only results” – Tony Robbins

In Carol Dweck’s ground-breaking book, Mindset, she describes how our beliefs can have a profound impact on every aspect of our lives.

A “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are innate. You are born with certain skills and you cannot change.

A “growth mindset”, on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as an opportunity for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.

If you want to switch careers to a new industry, you must believe that you can acquire the necessary skills. If not, you place yourself in a box with limited options based on your perceived current personality and strengths.

Below is a summary of why cultivating a growth mindset is so crucial:

Thokozile Mangwiro, a South African premium quality, natural hair care product manufacturer — Lionesses of Africa

Impact Partner Content – Absa

It is in growing her own natural hair for the past 15 years that Thokozile Mangwiro found her inspiration to create a natural hair care product line. After going to several salons and an endless search of locally produced products that truly work for afro natural hair, it was clear that there was a HUGE gap in the market for professionally formulated products for natural hair. Thokozile, like many other women, struggled with extremely dry hair. This, and the lack of knowledge, led to intense research and experimentation with natural ingredients such as Shea butter and avocado oil for skin and hair. After several years of research, formulations and product testing, Thokozile launched Nilotiqa, a line of products that are proudly made from organic and naturally formed ingredients to deeply moisturize and nourish natural hair.

Thokozile Mangwiro is an Information Technology Masters graduate from the University of South Africa, with over 8 years’ experience in the database administration, analysis and intelligence industry. She is a wife and mother of two energetic boys, Anesu and Omari. She is born and bred in South Africa, Johannesburg. A budding entrepreneur, she is driven and passionate about empowering and inspiring other women to feel naturally beautiful through products that are made in South Africa, are of the highest quality, are beautiful and luxurious, to showcase to the world.

Nilotiqa is one of the 117 companies showcased at the Absa Lionesses Xpo. Lioness Weekender spoke to Thokozile to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey and her aspirations for the future of her brand and business.

What does your company do?

We manufacture, distribute, and merchandise hair care products for retailers such as Clicks and Pick ‘n Pay; and market our Nilotiqa Hair Care product range.

What inspired you to start your company?

I have struggled with hair since I started growing my natural hair in 1999. In that defining and exciting moment, I quickly learnt that many of the products in retail stores were not created for my moisture hungry hair. I transitioned into dreadlocks the year after and have continued to do my own hair since then. Twelve years and several travels locally and internationally later, I continued to struggle until I began to formulate products that would truly nourish my hair. After two years of formulation, Nilotiqa was finally launched in February 2016. Since then, we have launched our products into Clicks Group and Pick ‘n Pay Group of stores. We therefore offer our customers easy access to our high quality products that cater to their hair.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

There is a huge gap in the market for a larger variety of additional products especially formulated for natural hair and skin care. The distinct difference of natural hair is that it requires products that are formulated for, but not limited to that specific type of hair. Nilotiqa was therefore formulated to focus on ultra-hydration, to promote healthy hair maintenance. The use of natural and organic ingredients has ensured that we offer our customers high quality products that do not contain harmful chemicals and still provide the most efficient nutrients. Our products are premium quality and offered at prices that are affordable to the target markets. Our main products are sustainable, support communities in Southern Africa and empower individual distributors of our products. We believe we offer an impact driven product, not only profit driven product lines.

Tell us a little about your team

Our team comprises myself, Thokozile Mangwiro, the founder of Nilotiqa. I am previously an ICT professional with a Master’s Degree in Data Analytics. I am responsible for all the product creation and administration for Nilotiqa. The Channel Distribution Head, who brings a financial background to the company and heads distribution. While working for Proctor and Gamble and Simba, he gained great experience in creating strong relationships with wholesalers and distributors. Our production manager leads two staff. We have an expert Social Media/Marketing Manager who manages our social media platforms and PR.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

I come from an academic and corporate background. I have always understood the idea of entrepreneurship, however I was focused on my corporate career. Even known to be creative, I was taught that academia was the only path to fulfilling one’s dreams. After my master’s degree, I felt as though I was not reaching my full potential as a human being; as an African woman. My love for Africa is very deep and I felt I was not creating anything that contributed to it. It is in the formulation of my products and the response of clients that I have found my entrepreneurial spirit. It is in my desire to want to create products that are impact driven, that will fuel this spirit. I have been running Nilotiqa since 2016. We have had huge business achievements; and very difficult times within the retail space. We have had to learn everything about how systems in retail work; we have experienced more NOs than I thought I could handle. This remains one of the most beautiful journeys of my life.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

On the retail side, we intend on seamlessly supplying Clicks Group and growing within their business; supplying Woolworths, Pick and Pay and Dischem stores with our brand across the African Continent. We will also manufacture and produce beauty and personal care products for the retailers we will be supplying. The hair industry is a constantly growing industry worth millions, especially in Africa. In Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria alone, consumers spend over $440 million a year on haircare products. According to a CNN report, “products that claim to solve specific hair concerns such as dry hair, thin hair and discoloration are doing well in South Africa.” Furthermore, Nilotiqa has the potential to expand to other continents across the world. The need for high quality organic and natural products is a growing trend that we intend to fulfil.

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

Through Nilotiqa, I get to make our customer feel so good about themselves. They fall in love with their hair… over and over again.

What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

A start-up can be challenging to women who do not have a vision of what they are trying to accomplish. My advice to fellow entrepreneurs is to focus on their vision. Focusing on a strong vision will pull you through the emotional roller-coaster; it will pull you through the fear and doubt that will surely come. A strong vision will lead to the success of your business.

Chiinga Musonda, a pioneering artisan chocolate brand builder — Lionesses of Africa

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Our chocolates are made from carefully selected single origin cocoa beans to preserve the flavors of the country of origin. We are constantly fine-tuning our chocolate making process to ensure that you get premium quality chocolates.

We sell handcrafted chocolates and chocolate products that are made from natural ingredients with no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, and no preservatives.

Tell us a little about your team

Savanna Premium Chocolate has two Zambian co-founders (Lynn Musonda Phiri and myself, Chiinga Musonda) who manage the daily operation of the business and do everything from design, marketing, production, sales, etc. We wear many different hats at any given time, as this is the life of the entrepreneur. We also have few people that help us with the factory production. In addition, we have a group of dedicated ladies whose role is to sort all our cocoa beans to ensure that we only use the best cocoa beans to make our chocolates. They are also in charge of the roasting and shelling process. They are passionate about what they do and we couldn’t be happier to have them as part of our team and in turn to be making a difference in their lives. This is one of the reasons we love what we are doing. It’s about making a difference right here in Africa while creating great products for our customers!

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Both Lynn and I do not come from an entrepreneurial background.

I (Chiinga) have a completely different background. I have previously worked in banking with JP Morgan Chase and UBS in NYC. Most recently, I worked with the scientific publisher / information services provider Elsevier in The Netherlands. I also have an MBA from the Harvard Business School and a BA in Economics and in Computer Science from Smith College in the USA.

Lynn previously worked for the Zambia Telecommunications company. She is currently pursuing an MBA in International Business and has a BA with honors in Business Studies with Marketing from University of Greenwich.

Sinah Mojanko, a South African recycling entrepreneur creating opportunities and jobs — Lionesses of Africa

What inspired you to start your company?

My experience working at ABSA where we were financing small businesses, my career in the HR space, and my husband who has always been an entrepreneur, inspired me to start this business. There was a time when the business was doing extremely well, and at that time we had taken away from the streets a few Nyaope addicts and had appointed them at our firm. They changed drastically to be better people and some even stopped smoking. They took care of themselves as they got the sense of how good it feels to be clean, have clean clothes on (which my husband had bought for them). Some even went back and re-united with their families. The management changed and things started slowing down and my husband went into the corporate space and worked full time. With time and the entrepreneurial spirit in him, he felt he needed to go back and be self-employed again. By the time he decided that, I had already started with the company registration process and had started marketing clients for our business and had secured a few (KitKat stores around Pretoria). We unfortunately at that time had no bakkie (car) to use for collecting at those stores and unfortunately lost the business opportunity to somebody else. But because we already had a client base of collectors, we got the business up and running with what and who we had. To date we are still in operation and getting stronger by the day.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

The company buys its recyclables from those Moms, Dads, Brothers and Sisters who are always out there on the streets, whether sunny or rainy, collecting those recyclables that we just throw everywhere (also keeping and maintaining our environment’s cleanliness) thus enabling them to provide for their family’s needs and also to be able to put food on their tables. We also buy our stock from the municipality dumping sites where a lot of retrenched, unskilled and skilled labourers resorted to due to lack of unemployment, thus enabling them to have financial distress. We also collect from schools, different companies and different shopping complexes/ malls.

Tell us a little about your team

We are a team of four which includes 1 sorter, 1 bailer (both based at the company’s site), the driver (collector/relationship builder and maintainer).

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

It all started when I was in middle school. I would plait people’s hair for R10 per head and used that money to help with a few little things at home. I then later started a mini car wash where I would offer to wash cars over weekends. I really loved the entrepreneurial route after starting my career at ABSA Small Business division where I would engage and interact with a lot of women entrepreneurs who then inspired me, but the cherry on top was meeting my husband who has been an entrepreneur when we first met to date.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

The plan is to own a recycling plant where we will have a drop off area for all small (individuals) and large (companies) collectors, then supply big recycling organisations with bails and also export to other countries. I would also like to see us owing a recycling centre where we will be developing, mentoring and coaching recycling entrepreneurs.

Accelerate your Digital Transformation Journey, a must read for Board Members, C-level Executives and Business Owners  — Lionesses of Africa

by Nkemdilim Uwaje Begho

“At least 40% of all businesses will die in the next 10 years… if they don’t figure out how to change their entire company to accommodate new technologies.” — John Chambers

Digital Transformation is often pigeonholed as an IT topic or project that only concerns the CIO or CTO….but it is much more than that. It is really all about rethinking your business in the Digital Age.

What is Digital Transformation?

Here are my two favourite definitions for anyone that may be wondering what exactly Digital Transformation is:

Digital Transformation is the process of using digital technologies to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements.

Digital Transformation is turning your business into a 21st century organization that is strategically driven by technology & data and focuses on innovation at the intersection of Technology and Human Behaviour.

With COVID-19 being the one thing that has pushed executives over the ledge and has made sure that even sceptics of Digital Transformation are now embracing it, it is highly important for Board Members, C-Level Executives and Business Owners to be equipped with the right knowledge and understand the principles of Digital Transformation.

There is no alternative to Digital Transformation, visionary companies will carve out new strategic options for themselves — those that don’t adapt will fail. — Jeff Bezos

I held a Digital Transformation Masterclass on Zoom last week — specifically for Board Members, C-Level Executives and Business Owners. It was an amazing experience being able to share my knowledge and experience with over 60 participants.

In conversation with…

I was joined by Digital Transformation Expert Nkiruka Uwaje, who has worked with big corporates in the UK helping them think through their Digital Transformation journeys and also happens to be my sister. I asked Nkiru a few very important questions around Digital Transformation:

1. Why should companies accelerate their Digital Transformation Journey

Digital as a Resilience Strategy:

The ongoing pandemic has forced us all to rethink strategies and accelerate Digital Transformation. COVID is a great diagnostic test that has served up major gaps in technology & service delivery across private and public sector.

Consumer Culture is changing:

We are seeing massive changes in Consumer culture and only an amazing Customer Experience (CX), winning Digital Marketing strategies and simple yet innovative products can ensure that customers stay with you.

The Challengers are here:

Challenger Brands are disrupting more and more industries. The order of the day for established brands is accelerate innovation and agility or die.

2. What are the Pillars of Digital Transformation

The pillars of Digital Transformation

  • Customer Experience (Marketing, Service / Product Delivery)

  • Data (Analytics, BI, Big Data)

  • Infrastructure & Architecture (Cloud, APIs, Open Network Economy)

  • Security (Cyber Security)

3. What are the Key Technologies that drive Digital Transformation

Nkiru talked us through key technologies driving Digital Transformation that every executive needs to understand:

  • Cloud

  • Data

  • Open Network Economies

  • Platforms

  • APIs

I elaborated on this point during my Masterclass as well and outlined areas that executives need to dig deeper in and expand their knowledge in.
