Meet the Crew: Femi Awojide

Good cinematography is one that delivers the intended emotions for the story.

What personality or character traits are necessary to excel as a cinematographer/DP?

We are scientific and creative collaborators in recreating worlds or the director’s vision, hence, a cinematographer must a lot of things but most importantly, a keen listener; and not just an observer but an objective witness of his world.

In terms of cinematographers, who do you admire (Nigerian and/or International)?

I admire different things in different cinematographers so they are too many to list but I will mention a few. For modern cinematographers, I admire Bradford Young‘s use of shadows, Dan Laustsen‘s use of colour, Shane Hurlbut‘s innovation, Roger Deakins simplicity plus scale.

What makes good cinematography? That is a broad question but I’d say good cinematography is one that delivers the intended emotions for the story.
