Every business and organisation needs to get its brand message across to its customers and audiences, and to ensure it has that all important visibility in the marketplace. In South Africa, Tshepiso Branding Solutions, cofounded by Sarah Motshwane Sebetola, is a company bringing both brand expertise and solutions to suit all needs.
Tshepiso Branding Solutions is one of the 117 companies showcased at the Absa Lionesses Xpo.Lioness Weekender chatted to co-founder Sarah Motshwane Sebetola to find out more.
What does your company do?
Tshepiso Branding Solutions is a South African 51% woman-owned company that offers various signage and corporate branding solutions to corporates, SME’s, individuals and various institutions. At Tshepiso Branding Solutions , we understand that branding and signage is not just putting up a sign, it’s a communication tool that allows corporates to create signature and timeless brands. Tshepiso Branding Solutions strives to assist brands to have that unique identity that resonates with their stakeholders on and offline. We offer SMART corporate branding and signage solutions (from design to implementation), to enable brands to increase their awareness, get customer recognition and a credible brand persona. Our SMART solutions expose and uncover hidden gems, because we understand that if a brand is not known it will not grow!!!
What inspired you to start your company?
Firstly, being retrenched three times, twice in one year. Secondly, working for an SME and witnessing how possible it is for me to start my own as long as I am focused, determined and have a clear vision. I also have quite a diverse skillset from communications, to project management, sales, marketing and public relations. Knowing that those skills alone will not help me I partnered up with a person with financial acumen, design skills as well as experience within the corporate branding and signage industry. Our skills complement each other, and we have been able to work like a well-oiled machine, while putting our differences aside because we have our eye on the prize!!!
Why should anyone use your service or product?
Although our business model is similar to that of our competitors, we pride ourselves with the fact that we respond quicker to client requests and our service is more personalised. We are flexible enough to respond to last minute requests. We will introduce a more SMART branding solution in our endeavour to be an active participant in the creation of building South Africa as a SMART country. This is what will really set us apart.
Tell us a little about your team
There are two of us for now. My partner and I are a great team, we work well together and have different complimentary expertise that enable us to carry out daily business development tasks. While his strengths are in design, finance and with established relationships with suppliers, my strengths are in sales, marketing, business development, project management and social media management to name a few. While I can be focused on work all the time, he helps me find the much needed balance to focus on other things that matter.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
From early childhood, my grandmother raised us from being self-employed. She would stock vegetables that my siblings and I would sell in the village using a wheelbarrow. From when she dropped off the bus, we knew that we had to pack it and get on the road. We would compete with our neighbour and always got excited when our profits were more than hers. We were not ruthless just kind and knew that our next meal depended on each sale. We never went to bed hungry. In retrospect I realise that if she could empower herself against all the odds so can I. More so with the vast opportunities that are afforded to women today. I love the space I am in, as unpredictable as it is, I strongly believe that the opportunities are endless regardless of how small the business currently is. I always tell people that although we’re still small we do not think nor act small. The focus is not where we are but where we’re going and being intentional about it!!!
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
To introduce SMART branding solutions in our endeavour to be an active participant in the creation of building South Africa as a SMART country. This is what will really set us apart. Having attended the Smart City Expo in Barcelona, I learned of the many different SMART solutions we can introduce in our effort to play an active role in the branding of a SMARTER South Africa.
What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
Shared value for our clients. While it is important that we make a profit, we do not make it at all costs. We know that we are dealing with people who deserve the utmost care, respect and professionalism that will hopefully keep them loyal to our business. The most satisfaction comes from a client who is happy with what we have been able to create for them. We share in their excitement and get filled with pride with every compliment we receive. Lioness Weekender spoke to the impact driven co-founder of Black Mamba, Claudia Castellanos, to find out more about her unique entrepreneurial journey and her vision for the future of the business.
What inspired you to start your company?
I am originally from Colombia, and came to Eswatini (back then called Swaziland) in 2008 to work as a volunteer for a handcraft business called Gone Rural, to support them with capacity building in marketing. From that experience I fell in love with Eswatini and decided to stay, and do more development work with women. In 2010 together with my now husband Joe Roques we started Black Mamba. He was obsessed with chillies and I was convinced I could replicate the business model focused on inclusion of grassroots communities that I had seen working for many handcraft businesses in Eswatini.
I am also passionate about the environment, and I thought that by creating a business following my values, I could not only bring positive change to rural communities, but also contribute to the respect and protection of the environment. This is done through the use of organically grown ingredients and regenerative farming practices, and using environmentally friendly packaging material such as glass. My driving force is “Be the change you want to see in the world”. And I thought I could be that change through Black Mamba.
Why should anyone use your service or product?
Black Mamba’s tag line is: Tastes good, looks good, does good. This very much sums up our products.
Taste good: our products are like an explosion of flavour: they are made with organically grown ingredients, no artificial flavours or preservatives, and really flavourful spices. As a matter of fact, all of our chilli sauces have won a Great Taste Award (kind of like the Oscars for food in the U.K.).
Looks good: our brand is proudly African, yet funky and contemporary enough to be perceived as high-end and of great quality.
Does good: because we care about the environment and the communities we work with, and we strive to create positive change for Eswatini.
Tell us a little about your team
Black Mamba has 15 full time employees, of which 12 are women (yes, we are a bit gender biased!). Our management team is composed of 6 women (including myself) and 2 men, all from Eswatini except our Business Development Manager who is South African and based in SA. The production team is composed of 6 women (most of whom have been with Black Mamba from its inception) that are capable of manufacturing and packing each one of our products by hand, and make it look so professional that people find it hard to believe that everything, including putting labels, is still done by hand. Now, that we have been introducing machinery to scale our production, the current team will still be in charge of overseeing the whole process. The team is completed by our extremely capable driver.
Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And, do you come from an entrepreneurial background?
My previous work experience was in the corporate world, and nothing in my background or preparation would have made me decide to become an entrepreneur. I like to think of myself as an Accidental Entrepreneur. However, after my experience as a volunteer in Eswatini, I realized that the only way I could really work on development and creating real change, was through being my own boss and applying my personal ethos and values to my business. Eswatini was also a perfect trial ground for starting my own business!
What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?
Black Mamba has recently received an investment from a venture capital fund called Enygma Ventures. We believe this is the result of years of hard work and proving that a business model with a strong social and environmental ethos can also be successful and profitable. This capital is allowing us to expand our production capacity, improve our distribution channels, and increase the reach of our brand: basically, it is allowing us to scale our business exponentially. I always jokingly say that we are on the quest of Chilli world domination. In truth though, my plan is for Black Mamba to become a cult brand, recognised in the Speciality Food market, as amazing as well as socially and environmentally responsible. I would also like for our business model to be replicated by other agri-businesses in Africa. I strongly believe that the future of Africa is in Agri-processing of high value, organic crops.
What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?
On a business level, seeing real, positive change through what we do, and being able to grow a company with a strong social and environmental ethos, makes me extremely proud and happy. The fact that we are building a great brand that is getting international recognition and is now backed up by investment capital is also worth of a victory dance in my corner.
On a personal level, the flexibility that comes with being an entrepreneur is well suited to being a mom of 2 small kids. I work harder now than with any corporate job I had before, but it doesn’t have to be on an 8 to 5 office schedule. This allows me to really spend time with them (and yes, make up from lost working time at ungodly hours, but such is life of an entrepreneur!).
What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?
Be passionate about what you choose to do. Don’t choose to become an entrepreneur to “make money”. When the going gets tough (and it will get tough) only that fire in your heart will push you to persevere.
It also doesn’t hurt to be curious, to ask questions, and to prepare yourself, thoroughly. Learn about your industry and markets as much as you can. Preparation gives you confidence, and confidence gives you positive energy to take action to achieve your goals!

What inspired you to start your company?
My first child; Gabby developed really bad eczema when she was only a baby. As a nurse for 10+years now, there are various treatments I know for various skin conditions. I tried them all from the most expensive skincare brands to the most organic homoeopathic solutions but nothing seemed to be working for her. Some did for a while, gave her a little relief but it was never permanent and it kept feeling like a never-ending war. My friends and family couldn’t even carry or play with her. She was so uncomfortable, fussy and didn’t enjoy being touched. She would cry and cry because she was itchy and uncomfortable all the time and as her mother, whenever she cried, I cried along with her.
Finally, I brought up the issue with my mother and she reminded me of the power of the shea nut, the same one she used when she was pregnant with us (her children) and the same one she used for us when we were younger and had skin and hair issues. I went ahead to create a mixture with the shea butter and some other potent ingredients and used it on Gabby. I realized that even on the first day of use, Gabby had become relaxed, calm and was sleeping better. Within a few days, Gabby was already sleeping better and smiling brightly like she used to. My friends and family were impressed by the quick improvement in my daughter’s condition and asked me to make some of the elixir for them. No matter their skin tone, race, age or gender, they all came back with amazing feedback and results after using it. After realizing the elixir, I had unknowingly created rapidly advanced the quality of my daughter’s life and others, there was no turning back, this miracle product had to be shared with the world.

As a woman who is a psychologist and an entrepreneur working in my field of study, it would perhaps not come as a surprise that I have a major interest for words and definitions. As a result, It is never too much to talk about the meaning of life impact topics such as Mental Health, that is why I shall begin my article with a few definitions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not just the absence of disease or illness”.
Mental Health – A state of well-being in which each individual realizes their own potential, can cope with the normal stress of life, can function productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to their community.
Mental illnesses are health conditions that involve changes in emotion, thinking or behaviour (or a combination of them). Mental illnesses are associated with distress and / or problems with functioning in social, professional or family activities.
I always find the WHO’s definition of Health interesting, and even though the word “Mental” is there, it is common to see how much the subject of mental health is still a topic some people struggle with.
Being a woman includes dealing with PMS, pregnancy or infertility, postpartum depression, menopause, diet, anxiety, mood disorders and other emotionally difficult conditions, all this combined with the pressure of the multiple roles we must take on within our society. It is scarcely remembered, however, that these peculiar aspects of the female gender still remain, for the most part, under the dance of hormones – and those hormones are what make women more vulnerable to mental disorders. An often-forgotten factor is the influence of hormones on our emotional health.
The factors that contribute to mental disorders such as anxiety and depression are very complex and can be different for everyone. They are countless and can range from genetics, physical health and lifestyle to life experiences, personality and emotional resilience. Understanding what is influencing our emotional state is very difficult, but it can help us look for the right treatments and support and find the best way to deal with anxiety, depression, etc.
Therefore, it is necessary to find ways to deal with these situations that due to our emotional, social, cultural, gender and the reality we live in, we are all in one way or another liable to experience certain moments of mental confusion and / or even of mental disorders. One way to begin is to educate ourselves, is to address the misconceptions about mental illness can stigmatize and discourage those who need help. We can do things differently by acquiring basic knowledge so that we can begin to be more compassionate with ourselves and understand others.
Every single day the world is constantly reminded of the immense power we women have, no matter our role, no matter our background. Remember, WE CAN, so strive to be an agent of change yourself and make Mental Health a daily topic!

What is it that really creates a loyal customer base? This is the constant question that has hung over entrepreneurs for centuries, even Charles Dickens realized that if he was to successfully write in magazines (how his books first appeared, chapter by chapter), he’d better have a shock or WOW! moment at the end of each chapter to encourage the sales of the next magazine.
Ever wondered why even today every TV series program ends on such a cliffhanger, with an extra huge shocker at the end of the series – which also encourages the TV companies to invest in another series as the public becomes desperate to learn what happened to Brenda Nana Mensah or Sheila Ade-Williams (yeah, you know who we are talking about, Nigeria!), or can you imagine if they cancelled the next series of Selina (sorry to spoil your Breakfast in East Africa with that thought!!!). All this was learnt from old Uncle Charles.
How do you translate this into sales for your business? You can hardly generate the same kind of suspense – the wait for the conclusion – by chopping your product in half and sending one part along leaving your customers wondering ‘will they, won’t they,’ sending the second part next week! Although that would certainly generate a certain WOW! factor…but perhaps not the one you hoped for!
In fact as the old saying goes – it’s the little things that count.
Our photo this week is of the incredible Moroccan lamps from an inspirational Moroccan Lioness, Dounia Tamri-Loeper, and her beautiful company, Dounia Home. Her lamps hang in some amazing homes across America. But what makes these so special is not just the design work, the skill, the effort (it’s not easy to punch so many holes so perfectly through the metal), which alone gives an incredible WOW! factor. The ‘Cherry on the top’, what truly personalizes this purchase and turns it more into a gift from the heart, is that when they arrive in people’s homes in America they are wrapped in handmade bags made by the wife of the Artisan manufacturer of these incredible lamps in Morocco. This ‘personalization’, this turning of a purchase into a feeling of a ‘gift’ is a WOW! factor that money simply cannot buy. The handmade bag, now used for the weekly grocery shop or visit to the local book store followed by coffee with pals, becomes a talking point amongst friends.
Melanie touched on this in two of her morning blogs this week.
“I have become much more conscious this past year of how powerful it is for businesses to make authentic personal connections with their customers…Last week, I received a delivery from one of my favourite local, woman-owned grocery stores, and whilst I was unpacking the bag, two things caught my attention. Firstly, there was an extra little brown paper packet with a handwritten message saying, “a little extra gift from us, have a great day.” Secondly, there was a beautiful printed thank you card, with a handwritten message from the founder saying, “Thank you for supporting a small business like ours, it means everything to us!” My reaction firstly on a human level was to feel really touched by the gesture, it made me feel a real emotional and personal connection with the business and the founder. Secondly, that message made me realize that my choosing to buy from a small independent business really meant something to the founder and her team, and importantly, it mattered to the success of the business. Taking the time to connect with customers on a personal basis makes a real difference – and as in my case, it can turn a customer into a lifelong brand fan. Making it personal really does work when you are an entrepreneur!”
And…
“I know the owner, Jessie, and her staff by name, and they know mine, and my customer experience always feels very personal…Jessie and her team send me regular, friendly Whatsapp messages each week, telling me what great new produce is in stock and sending me photographs of the best fruit and flowers to buy that day. They know my shopping habits, what I like to buy, and they personalize my customer experience for me. They are harnessing the power of great communication to connect me regularly to their business and their brand, and to keep them top of my mind.”
Melanie finished by asking the essential question: “Are you harnessing the power of communication to make your own customers feel like they are special each week, and to keep them coming back time and again?”
We have highlighted a few important phrases and words, because these are the crux of the issue. Just read through them again –
‘authentic personal connections’
‘a real emotional and personal connection’
‘really meant something’
‘turn a customer into a lifelong brand fan’
‘always feels very personal’
‘personalize my customer experience’
‘to keep them top of my mind’
and…’special’.
Take a moment to appreciate the strength in those phrases for your business. There is so much trust.
So how does this work in practice? The handwritten notes that Melanie received were perfect. Someone has taken the time to write: Thank you for supporting a small business like ours, it means everything to us!”
Lionesses understand this connection and there have been a number of examples we have seen on social media of customers celebrating these connections.
