Mr. Bekele Shikur is a Mathematics teacher at one of the partner schools called Bashewam School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He became a teacher not by choice but along the way, he learned that teaching is a way to shape generations morally and equipping children with knowledge through education.

The COVID 19 Season has seen him get a chance to teach students through an online platform created by the school as well as to provide a tutorial class for FAWE-Ethiopia, Mastercard Foundation scholars in three regions including Addis Ababa.

He explained that, COVID-19 has affected the teaching-learning process in so many ways. To mention some;

• As the students stay home, they are exposed to stress, anxiety and psychological problems. To improve their performance, they should work hard and dedicate more time to their studies in comparison with physical teaching.
• It created a challenge in evaluating students’ overall performance. Previously, evaluation was based only on sit in examinations

In the process of changing the teaching and learning process to online platforms, different activities were accomplished through a partnership created with partner schools such as orienting selected teachers on technology; specifically on how to use Google class room application.

The second activity was setting up the Google class room for selected subjects and assessment done to find out how many of the scholars have access to smart phones. The scholars were then told to open email addresses. The third and final activity was inviting scholars to join the google class room using the class code.

As the application had not been used before, it was difficult for some scholars to acquaint themselves with the online education program.  Later on, they learnt how to use the app and got a lot out of it. Internet connectivity is still a challenge which makes it difficult for teachers to gauge the attentiveness of the learners.

“All I can say is, I have got a chance to teach on the new technology platforms and be able to teach large number of students who live in different cities at the same time; which might be difficult to do on a face to face teaching program” Mr. Bekele added.

Mr. Bekele’s biggest concerns on online education include;

• Evaluation mechanisms and grading was previously done based on examination thus we need to  take up other types of evaluations such as group work and presentations
• The teaching learning process depends on the notes provided by the teacher
• Luck of face to face interaction with in the students and  between teacher and students

“In addition to these, the experience the students get from using the online platform will help them easily access other teaching and learning platforms in future” said the teacher.

Beamlak is a 20 year old girl who lives in Amhara regional state, Bahirdar city and one of the MCF FAWE – scholars’ program beneficiary. She is a fifth cohort scholar who is pursuing her education at Tana Haik, one of the partner schools.

Before joining FAWE-Ethiopia Mastercard Scholarship Program, she used to prepare and sell Kollo (toasted grains) and Kita (baked kind of pancake) at the local drinking houses. To prepare these snacks, she would bend for long hours and walk long distances to sell. Through selling Kollo and Kita she has supported herself until grade 8.

She has been suffering from a disease scientifically known as L4, 5 symmetric disc bulge which causes bilateral moderate neural foramen stenosis and mild spinal canal stenosis. Her medical examinations recently showed that her previous income generation activity exposed her to the disease. Before her case was identified, she had been tested at different clinics in Bahirdar (testing for malaria, Orthopedic) and different medication was prescribed and administered but to no relief. She even tried physiotherapy at Felege Hiwot Hospital, which is a government hospital, for 12 days. It got worse through time and she decided to seek divine intervention by trying the holy water outside Bahirdar town. She stayed at the venue for 15 days but it didn’t work.

She went back to Bahirdar from the holy water venue still in pain and tried out a different clinic. The doctor insisted that she does an MRI and the result shows that she had L4, 5 symmetric disc bulge. She was placed under medication for a month and asked to go back to the clinic after a month had elapsed.

Beamlak exhausted all her finances on medical examination and medication and further spent all of her housing support money provided by the MCF scholars program. She was dead worried on how to survive for the coming months. “Beside the financial insufficiency I faced, I was much stressed and worried about where to get support to survive.” Though she had medical insurance of 1000.00 ETB dedicated to each scholar, her expense was much higher than the earmarked budget for the medical insurance. She was been forced to borrow to add on to the money used from her housing support from the program. For her to cover the medical expenses incurred, the MCF in collaboration with FAWE has planned to support scholars through Covid-19 response intervention. “I am supported with the remaining amount during the COVID-19 pandemic.” She adds.

Today, she is in good health and said that if she wasn’t a beneficiary of the Mastercard Scholarship program, it would be difficult to afford medical treatment. She thanks Mastercard Foundation and FAWE-Ethiopia for their support in bringing her health back during the COVID-19 period.

2021 is the best time to become savvy with your money. We learnt the hard financial lessons last year and now it is time to use those lessons to build a better financial future.

Step 1 of becoming money savvy is to get clear on where you are now. This requires you to be honest with yourself. This exercise may bring up different emotions and that is okay. It is important that you feel those emotions and ask yourself why. For many people looking at their finances brings up negative emotions and can leave them feeling guilty, regretful and frustrated. Do not let this deter you. Take the time to recognize how you are feeling. This is an important step in your money journey.

Getting clear about where you are requires you to know the EXACT numbers. 

What is your current net worth? 

How much debt do you have? 

What is your credit score? Check out www.clearscore.com or www.transunion.co.za

How much do you have in savings and investments?

How much are you spending each month? 

How much are you making each month? How many income streams do you have?

Be honest and get clear about these numbers. 

Once you know where you know exactly where you are you are in a position of power to make the necessary changes. For example, perhaps you are spending more than you earn each month. Now you can draw up a budget or spending plan and cut back to make sure you are not living above your means. Perhaps you have actually saved more than you thought but you are not earning the highest return. Now you can educate yourself and find the best investment vehicle for your money.

Getting clear will help you to see the full picture and with transparency you can now take action to change what you want to change. 

Remember that you can get your children involved in this as well and help them to start learning about money. Get your teens to look at their numbers and be honest with themselves or have them do a mockup of what they would want in ten years’ time. Get your younger kids to calculate the grocery bill for the month and find ways where the household can cut back. Your children will not see you as ‘less than’ if you are not where you want to be financially. They will feel included in the home and appreciate being taught about money now, even if they only realize it in adulthood.
