South Africa is renowned around the world for its fine wine-making, and this month sees the launch of a great new collection of wines from Birthmark of Africa Wines, founded by Miranda Abrahams. Customers can select from a great choice of Red and White wines, Blends and Champagne. The new collection includes Brut Chardonnay MCC – Méthode Cap Classique; Heritage Premium Red Blend; Heritage Premium White Blend; Premium Chardonnay; Premium Chenin Blanc; Premium Merlot; Premium Pinotage; and Premium Pinotage Rose.

The story of Birthmark of Africa Wines is unique. After being removed during the Apartheid Era to a disadvantaged area and experiencing many years of adversity, Miranda says God gave her, and her family, the gift to become winemakers. She believes that, “Prosperity is having God as your partner,” As a result, they ventured into the wine industry. Uniquely, Miranda was born with two birthmarks on her legs – one in the shape of Africa and the other one a bunch of grapes, which were replicated into the company’s logo. The company is named it “Birthmark Of Africa™ Wines” which links the past and the present to “a true destiny story”. Birthmark of Africa Wines is a 100% Black Owned Company and is 80% woman owned, 20% male owned, specializing in 100% South African wines.

Nunu Mugyenyi, Angel Nkwaya and Janet Mugume, three Ugandan entrepreneurs building an award-winning retail outlet — Lionesses of Africa

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Bold in Africa is where our entrepreneurial journey began. At conception, our vision was a lot smaller and shorter sighted than it is today. We were friends, fresh out of undergrad, with a common interest in fashion, so we decided to open a boutique where we used to, ironically, buy and re-sell second hand clothing. It wasn’t far along this journey that we identified two problems – there was nowhere convenient to purchase locally made, affordable clothing and there was nowhere affordable for designers to open convenient outlets. Within a year of our opening we transitioned from second-hand to Ugandan-made pieces, and then expanded into African-made. In 2019, seven years into our journey, we extended our product offering to include home decor and kids apparel. Over the years, we have continued to identify gaps in the market and have grown more conscious of our impact on our community, specifically (Bold) Women and African-made products. We continue to be inspired by entrepreneurs in our families, friends and community.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

Bold in Africa currently retails out of our Kampala physical store, only. While we also deliver within the city, until we launch our online store, our clients are primarily residents and visitors of Kampala city. We would very much like to expand our services to the rest of the world. So, our next step is to launch our online store in the next few weeks. Watch this space!

The Stories of Forward Thinking Women Entrepreneurs During the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic by Doretha Howard White — Lionesses of Africa

Book Review

Doretha Howard White’s new book, Quarantine Queens: The Stories of Forward-Thinking Women Entrepreneurs During the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic, is a book of its time and records the experiences of women entrepreneurs during one of the toughest business periods on record. It is a collection of inspiring essays written by women entrepreneurs in various stages of their entrepreneurial journeys and how they dealt with the challenges that the pandemic posed for their businesses.

When COVID-19 hit the U.S. in February of 2020, small businesses were among those hardest hit. Restaurants, hair salons, travel agencies, and more, all deemed non-essential businesses, were paused in many states and their futures hung in the balance. Instead of bemoaning their uncontrollable circumstances, 30 women entrepreneurs came together every night for 30 nights via Zoom video conference calls and engaged in a month-long cocoon’ designed to help them rethink, reimagine, and relaunch their businesses in a post-COVID-19 world. Led by educator and serial entrepreneur Doretha Howard White, these women redeemed the time of the quarantine by equipping themselves with new knowledge, new vigor, and most importantly, new, lifelong friendships and supporters.

Author quotes

I am proud to showcase the stories of these amazingly brave, strong, ambitious, brilliant female bawses!

For me personally, this experience was nothing short of amazing and life changing.

The Quarantine Queens Mastermind suddenly gave me something positive to focus on  and to look forward to. I was locked and loaded and ready to make a difference in the lives of the women who showed up for this challenge.

About the author

Doretha Howard White is the founder of the Quarantine Queens, a 30-day Women’s Entrepreneurship Mastermind for women business owners all along the entrepreneurial spectrum. Before taking the leap into entrepreneurship with her husband Michael in 2005, Doretha enjoyed a gratifying career in education as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, teacher development specialist, and college instructor. She and Michael now own 3 businesses. As a serial entrepreneur turned business coach, she reads everything she can get her hands on about business ownership, leadership and success. She is on a quest to train others to start and maintain successful small and mid-size businesses that are birthed out of one’s own imagination, gifts, talents, skill-sets and passions. Doretha believes that knowing how to start and run a successful business is something everyone should learn. She is passionate about teaching new entrepreneurs everything that she has learned along the way. To that end, Doretha has developed online courses about entrepreneurship, self publishing and life skills.

Femi Oyedipe, Nigeria’s sustainable bean-to-bar chocolate producer — Lionesses of Africa

Femi is a highly creative entrepreneur with a knack for quality management and brand projection. Since 2016, the company has experienced significant growth and acceptance amongst both local and international communities. Loshes Chocolate products are spread across local unique high-end stores and at the International Duty Free with further plans to expand to reach international clients.

Femi has achieved certifications in the Art of Bean to Bar processing of Chocolates from Legnano, Italy. She also holds a Master’s degree from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.
Femi is a firm believer in wellness, organic and clean label foods, sustainability, capacity development of local resources, and environmental consciousness. By 2031, she plans to drive Loshes Chocolate operations towards Green Production Thinking and the Circular Environment, whereby waste generated is recycled for energy generation, vertical planning, and animal feeds.

Lioness Weekender spoke to the passion driven Femi Oyedipe about her business, her growth trajectory, and her future aspirations for this growing bean-to-bar chocolate brand.

When did your start your business?:

The idea was birthed in 2015 and we went commercial in 2016. The one year period was used for feasibility studies and market awareness.

What does your company do?

At Loshes Chocolate, we source cocoa beans locally at fair trade and craft the unique taste of each bean origin to fine chocolates in a bean-to-bar, single origin range of Chocolates. We create a variety of Chocolates from Dark, Milk, White and Dark-Milk Chocolates from Idere (Oyo State) and Ile-Oluji (Ondo State). We also provide Chocolate Chips, Cocoa Powder, Bakers Chocolate and Custom Chocolate Recipes.

What inspired you to start your company?

We looked for value to create a credible capacity development and a blueprint for sustainable growth. The cocoa industry provided a good opportunity to demonstrate the value of processing a raw material into a finished product. Our journey passed through research and development, local equipment manufacturer (chocolate specific and general) and local material sourcing to create a 100 percent locally sourced product. Ensuring that as we grow all these industries that supply resources for our chocolates will also grow and this is the sustainable growth we aim for.
We also have developed our business to support the United Nations sustainable growth goals centered around Good Health and Well-being; Gender Equality; Decent Work and Economic Growth; and Sustainable Cities and Communities. This is an intentional attempt to add value to where we work and conduct our business.

Why should anyone use your service or product?

Quality – our chocolates are made from carefully selected cocoa beans without any additives or preservatives and are made to the highest level of quality attainable with artisan chocolates, providing the full health and mood benefits of cocoa.

Hand Crafted – our chocolates are single origin chocolates, each with a unique set of flavors from cocoa origins and preserved into the final chocolates to create a diverse sensual experience.

Variety – our wide variety of chocolates guarantees satisfaction to meet the most diverse taste preferences.

Fresh Chocolates / Custom Recipes – reduced time between production and consumption and flexibility to meet a wide variety of chocolate needs.

Homemade – made locally yet made to the highest standard of chocolates in their class, and a means of improving the local economy

Tell us a little about your team

I am the CEO in a team of 11 staff collectively. My responsibility is to ensure that the vision of Loshes Chocolate is materialized. We have an Operations / Production Supervisor who has grown with us from inception to this position. He is in charge of ensuring smooth and efficient production. Our Quality Control Officer is responsible for ensuring products meets QC levels and are batched /tagged properly. Accounts /Customer Service Officer handles both clients’ accounts and petty cash operations within the factory. My husband provides technical consultation in the design and selection of equipment, He remains our technical consultant till date. The rest of the team are vibrant young ladies that function in the molding & tempering department, cleaning and sundry, grinding and raw materials. We are a female predominant business, even our lady grinders are named after exemplary women in Nigeria and across Africa. We are a growing boutique team with a positive culture and integrity to always do what we have said we will do and we care for each other. We are not only focused on what we make but on how we make the chocolates.

Share a little about your entrepreneurial journey. And do you come from an entrepreneurial background?

Well, after I completed my undergraduate studies in 2005, I realized I had a flare for creativity and a passion to use my hands to create beautiful things. Though I kept a 9-5 working job, I had a stint in makeup artistry where I trained with a famous UK brand and did make up for brides during the weekends. I even began to distribute renowned makeup brands at one point, but I still felt unfulfilled. Then in 2011, after completing an MSC program in Human Resources Management from Scotland, I moved to Ghana and whilst living and working (volunteering), I developed a very keen interest in baking and cooking up deserts. So, in my spare time I would bake cupcakes, cakes frosted with chocolate ganache’s for friends and family, and before I knew it, I began to cater to a wider community of dessert lovers. Then my business Creme Indulgence was birthed and I created deserts for special occasions. Then my family and I had to return home to Nigeria, so armed with a master’s degree and some years of work experience I got a job as an HR Manager. After a couple of years, I yearned for more, and I sought ways to add impact in our society, and so Loshes Chocolate was born.

What are your future plans and aspirations for your company?

To consistently provide value in the African economy by processing a natural resource (Cocoa) into finished products. Along the way there will be significant capacity development, knowledge sharing, improving equipment manufacture capacity and impacting the communities, which will ultimately bring tangible, measurable, achievable and sustainable growth. The Loshes Chocolate brand will be synonymous with the best type of Chocolate / Cocoa finished product and associated with unwavering quality in Africa and in the global community. This is our dream!

What gives you the most satisfaction being an entrepreneur?

The ability to conceive an idea, implement the idea and experience the satisfaction and value it brings to the lives of people. All these factors lead to building a successful brand and this satisfies my entrepreneurial thirst.

What’s the biggest piece of advice you can give to other women looking to start-up?

Let the passion and reason “WHY” be defined with unwavering conviction and this serves as a compass for steering the business.

Be seen… and heard on ESG — Lionesses of Africa

By Lionesses of Africa Operations Dept

Since our previous letter in March on the EU’s move to legislate ESG to all via the financial world (here), where financial companies marketing their products within the EU now have to prove if they are ESG compliant (or not, they do have the choice). To take this seriously at a high level and to show this is not just a tick-box exercise, there is no doubt now (as we foretold) that this will filter quickly through to corporations and their supply chains. The finance world (if it wants the ESG tick) must pay attention, research, investigate and invest with ESG in mind.

Is this a good thing, or will there be unintended consequences that will hide the good and great work being done elsewhere? For example in the various SDGs covered by our inspirational membership (now 1.2 million strong). The HoF was speaking to one of his banking pals this week who said that meeting the ESG requirements is being discussed and enacted across all departments. Discussions with clients on lending, on issuance of bonds, notes, IPO’s and indeed M&A all now include ESG compliance.

This does not mean that there will be instant bans on flying; that electric will replace petrol or diesel cars starting from tomorrow; coal or gas fired power stations will be shut down; indeed there are very few countries that overnight can switch totally from carbon fuels to green, and so at a minimum gas powered power stations will be with us for many years. One can also not forget that the development world (currently the worst offenders in the carbon world, could rightly claim (and are) that the ‘west’ has an unfair advantage given that its industrial revolution happened centuries ago when no one really cared about smoke filled lungs. Although to be fair, according to Peter Brimblecombe in his book “Attitudes and Responses Towards Air Pollution in Medieval England” (the HoF’s bedtime reading never fails to surprise…), the fears over smoke in the lungs were first mentioned in the 12th century leading (in the following century), to King Edward I, banning the burning of ‘sea-coal’ in 1272. Still, the developing world does have a point.

As many have recognised, even Greta Thunberg, it will be impractical to stop all flying, and we agree as face to face meetings (in spite of our overnight change to zoom meetings), and factory, farm and mining visits will still be necessary. But there are many other ways one can cut our own carbon footprint, although not everyone has the willpower to become Vegan overnight – as the old story goes:

There was a 137 year old French lady. She was interviewed about the secret of her long life. She told the journalist: “I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I’ve never gambled, I eat frugally, and exercise each day.” He then asked: “does that mean you will live forever?” “No, but it feels like it,” she replied in a resigned tone….’.

…but as the title of Greta Thunberg’s book makes clear “No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference” (here), we can all do our bit personally. What the EU’s regulations mean is that companies and especially the large corporates who are used to being reported on the front pages, need to be very careful to ensure ESG means ESG.

So how will all of this be measured? What will give the incentive for all these companies to truly change? As we mentioned in our last letter on this subject (here), there have been some very ‘interesting’ uses of ‘Green’ Bonds from companies that haven’t a green bone in their corporate bodies, yet were bought aggressively and over-subscribed when issued. Sadly until a serious system of measurement appears, many of those doing great work in Green or ESG and our own area of SDG may be hidden from view by the large fog that descends as all companies, banks and finance houses claim the high ground, which with their huge war-chests of money they can do with ease. Sadly in recent years, so long as you say something enough times and loud enough, it becomes the truth.
