You have power over your mind — Lionesses of Africa

Amen to that last one! Take a step back and you will actually see more clearly the problems, the noise, and solutions. Do not be all about business. If you carry your business everywhere as a millstone around your neck, this will drain you and you will no longer see clearly, no longer be within touching distance of your dream. The skies will be dark with your brooding and all memories of blue skies will be gone.

But as always, it is easier said than done, although one assumes not for a Roman Emperor who had no one to point out that they were procrastinating, confusing, wandering in their thoughts or perhaps a tad too aggressive. Actually that might be a bit unfair to his advisors as we don’t know for sure, but we can’t imagine they had a long shelf life if they overstepped and became too truthful to their Leader…

But this is an important point. Leading a company (or even an empire for that matter!) is a lonely job. No one understands the company as you do. The Board who probably (after you) know the most about the directions, plans and issues, won’t know the day-to-day issues that you have to deal with, they deal with just the upper stratosphere stuff. Your trusty right hand woman or Chief of Staff knows most of the day-to-day issues, but doesn’t have the responsibility. Your CFO and COO are bogged down in their own issues whilst feeling they should not bother you with minutiae. Your management team have their own departmental agendas. Your employees are most concerned about their hard work being recognised in pay, in praise or in both. Your partner at home doesn’t know the full story and can only offer support as advice is so difficult and will be influenced by their love, their concern for your health, and worry that you work too hard.

So where are you?

No doubt stuck somewhere floating in between all these parties wondering why someone has taken all the colours from your palette and you now are only painting in monochrome. This is certainly true for many CEO’s during these terrible times and even Marcus’ most well known saying: Do every act of your life as if it were your last gives little comfort as often in these situations and with so much noise rushing around your head, you could be forgiven for thinking that indeed each decision will terrifyingly be your last for your company!

At times like these it is often useful to recognize as Marcus did in our title quote this weekend, that you can control only what you can control and that starts with having power over your own mind.  As Jack Ma said in the ‘Looking for Africa’s Business Heroes – Documentary of the 2019 Africa’s Business Heroes Competition’ (here – see 14.32) in answer to a question on how he avoids burn out from our very own Christelle (here), – he says that you have to know how to prioritise, otherwise it is impossible to survive. Being able to prioritise and that includes the essential ‘me time’ is not easy. Everyone wants a piece of you, yet controlling your own mind is the first step on this journey to controlling far more. This is seen clearly when one starts meditation. The hardest part is calming the constant noise racing within your own head. This is why so many meditation techniques have mantras that allow you to be taken to that almost somnolent state that quietens the noise within and allows you to breathe undisturbed and indeed, see more clearly now.

As Emperor Marcus Aurelius did, use a mantra, a daily habit, even a Diary where one can write out one’s thoughts, to calm your mind. Such a habit when cultivated will allow you to see all obstacles in your way (if you want to find solutions, first see the problem!), to see the sky clearly – almost as if (continuing to misquote the great Jimmy Cliff) – the rain is gone and there are Blue Skies all around…

As Marcus Aurelius tells us – “In your life, don’t be all about business.– so for a moment, kick off your shoes, sit back, click here and listen to the great man himself take you to a calmer place – Oh and smile at this beautiful song – you deserve it!

“I can see clearly now the rain is gone.

I can see all obstacles in my way.

Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind.

It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) sunshiny day.

Oh, yes I can make it now the pain is gone.

All of the bad feelings have disappeared.

Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for.

It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright) sunshiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothing but blue skies.

Look straight ahead, there’s nothing but Blue Skies.

I can see clearly now the rain is gone.

I can see all obstacles in my way.

Here is that rainbow I’ve been praying for.

It’s gonna be a bright (bright)

Bright (bright) sunshiny day.”

On that we can all agree!

Stay safe.

Multiple Income Streams — Lionesses of Africa

by Kathryn Main

Gone are the days when the mom stays home to take care of the kids while the dad goes to work. I was fortunate when I was younger because my mom stayed at home. She on the other hand was totally unfortunate. When her and my dad divorced at 40, she had to start her life with nothing, never having worked and having no real skills.

Even if I did have a husband who could look after our family, I would insist on making my own money. Not just one source, but multiple sources of income. Why? For me, my most important value is security, so having money speaks to my values and beliefs. I never want to end up like my mom with not enough money to look after myself.

It’s clear now more than ever that having more than 1 source of income is not a ‘nice to have’ but a necessity. With prices and inflation always on the rise fixed income is no longer the best solution if you have plans on growing your wealth or retiring rich. Having multiple income streams does not mean you have to have 3 jobs and survive on 3 hours of sleep per night. The smart way to create income is through passive sources. Putting your savings in an interest-bearing bank account will yield interest. The longer the savings stay in the bank the longer you get the benefit of interest and compound interest.

You could start investing and save the money you do make in a tax-free savings account. You can save as much as R36 000 a year for 5 years without paying tax on your savings. You can rent out a room in your home or turn your outside toilet into a guest suite for rental. You could look at starting a drop shipping online store. Building the online store, you can do mostly for free with the number of platforms available today. Drop shipping means never having to buy stock but rather selling the stock and then the suppliers post it directly to your customer for you. This whole process can be automated and all you need is a smart marketing plan and budget.

What are some of the ways that you could carve out some extra income for yourself? Have you thought about turning your passion into profit?

Financial literacy is the cornerstone of prosperity and security. It builds confidence and knowledge in the lives of individuals and the country. We cannot address the issues of financial inclusion and equitable and sustainable socio-economic development without addressing financial literacy.

At Money Savvy we have several online and face-to-face programmes to help you make more money and grow your wealth. Ask us how:

It’s never too late to reinvent your personal brand, here’s how…. — Lionesses of Africa

by Lori Milner

7 ways to create the best version of yourself…

I have coached and trained hundreds of people on personal branding and the number one question I get asked is: “Is it too late for me to reinvent my brand and change perceptions?” The good news is that it is never too late.

When it comes to your personal brand, you have the choice to either do a full reboot or make some small upgrades to your operating software.

Before you charge forward, you must first understand the current context. Consider these questions:

  • When you walk into a room, how do people receive you?

  • What do you think is the biggest misconception they have about you?

  • How do you want people to perceive you?

  • What words do you want to come into their mind when they think about you?

  • What do you want to be known for?

  • What is the promise you make and what can people expect of you when they engage with you?

Now that you have a clear idea of how you want to show up, you need to make sure your behaviour is in alignment.

Branding is not something you do; it is who you are.

You do not need a new website or more frequent posts on social media to change perceptions.

Great brands are created from the inside out.

Reinvention begins with your thinking –your internal dialogue, thoughts and beliefs. These shape your actions, your habits and character.

Here are the steps to begin the journey to reinventing your personal brand:

1. Change your code

“Words are free. It’s how you use them that may cost you.” – Kushand Wizdom

The mind is a supercomputer and will do what you instruct it to do.

Psychologist, Marissa Peer says, “Your mind does not care if what you tell it is good, bad, true, false, healthy unhealthy, or right or wrong, it accepts and acts on your words regardless”.

Think about your words as the code for your internal programming. Confidence starts in the mind with the thoughts you tell yourself. What you communicate to yourself has a huge impact on how you project yourself to the rest of the world.

Choose your words carefully – how often do you describe yourself as stressed, a worrier, anxious, shy, useless, not enough?

Jack Canfield, best-selling author of ‘Chicken Soup for the Soul’ suggests that the first step to owning your headspace is “to take control of the thoughts you think, the images you visualize, and the actions you take.”

How you use these three things determines everything you experience. If you don’t like what you are currently producing and experiencing, you must change your responses.

Change your negative thoughts to positive ones. Change what you daydream about. Change your habits. Change what you read. Change how you talk to yourself and others.

It doesn’t matter how professional your website is or where your SEO ranking lies – if you walk into a meeting feeling like you are not enough, it will filter through every aspect of yourself and people can pick this up instantly.

2. Let your future self be your North Star

“Victims use language to describe the life they lead. Owners use language to create the life they lead” – Steve Chandler

When it comes to reinventing your personal brand, there is an incongruity between being authentic to your current self and your future self.

Ask yourself these questions from Benjamin Hardy’s brilliant book, Personality isn’t Permanent:

  • Who would you be if you could creatively design yourself?

  • What would happen if you based your identity on who you want to be, rather than who you’ve been?

Let’s say you are working towards a particular role in your work, but it requires public speaking, and this terrifies you.

If you want to genuinely reinvent yourself, you need to make decisions that are authentic to your future self despite your fear and the discomfort you feel today.

Eventually over time, you will master the skills and become that person.

3. Shift from perfection to contribution

“Successful people become great leaders when they learn to shift the focus from themselves to others.” – Marshall Goldsmith

How many opportunities have you missed because you told yourself that you aren’t ready for it? Or you missed a deadline because you agonized over every word in the document or presentation?

Perfection is a mirage, a story you have told yourself. You may have every great intention of wanting the work to be perfect in order to be perceived as a powerful brand.

However, this approach is not sustainable and will only make you miserable because your definition of perfection is probably what is holding you back from being the brand you want.

In your eyes, it is never attainable and if it is, at what cost to you?

In order to reinvent yourself, you need to shift your focus from perfection to contribution.

When I must deliver a big talk or workshop and I can feel the fear of judgement creeping in, I remind myself I am there to deliver a message because I have the skills and knowledge.

I put my focus on delighting the audience and adding value to them. This can be an audience of two or two hundred.

It is no longer about me – it is about the message. All the fear of judgement dissipates, and I simply focus on the value I can bring.

When the next opportunity to present in a meeting comes up, remind yourself you have been asked for a reason. You have unique insights, perspectives and knowledge that will add value.

Put the focus on the audience – how do you want them to feel, think and do as a result of what you have shared?

Then it doesn’t matter if you forgot a particular fact or how you spoke – it’s about the contribution you made and the problem you solved. That is a powerful brand.

4. Stop seeking external validation

“What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others.” – Confucius

The difference between external validation and self-worth is that one is an infinite resource and the other finite.

Constantly seeking external validation to boost your confidence and sense of self-worth is not a sustainable strategy. At some point, the external validation well will run dry.

Self-confidence comes from daily doses of micro wins. It is incremental steps over time in the direction of your goal that produces momentum. When you can see progress, your self-worth automatically inflates.

The problem with external validation is exactly that, it’s external. It’s nice to be told you did a good job and gain the recognition however this cannot be your permission device to feel good about yourself.

If you are only fuelled by other opinions of you, what happens after a week when the compliments wear off? Reinventing your brand begins when you can fill your own cup first.

You must walk into a room feeling enough despite the outcome and what people say.

If you give your power away to the next criticism, snotty email or strange look – you will always be chasing other’s approval of you and stay in the zone of ‘not enough’ and dent your self-worth.

Imagine yourself as a battery pack, you know the ones you carry around for your phone?

You need to start the day on full charge, you can’t have the mind-set that another person, another meeting, another sale (fill in the blank) will charge that battery for you.

Have you ever tried to charge your Apple phone on an Android charger? It’s just not going to happen. It’s the same with you.

Don’t put your self-worth or acceptance of yourself in the hands of another person. You may just not be compatible, and they will never be able to charge your battery.

For those days when you are feeling half full, then make sure you surround yourself with people who love and support you. They are the only compatible chargers.

5. Fixed mindset vs growth mindset

“There’s no such thing as failure, only results” – Tony Robbins

In Carol Dweck’s ground-breaking book, Mindset, she describes how our beliefs can have a profound impact on every aspect of our lives.

A “fixed mindset” assumes that our character, intelligence, and creative ability are innate. You are born with certain skills and you cannot change.

A “growth mindset”, on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as an opportunity for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.

If you want to switch careers to a new industry, you must believe that you can acquire the necessary skills. If not, you place yourself in a box with limited options based on your perceived current personality and strengths.

Below is a summary of why cultivating a growth mindset is so crucial:
